KAtoms for palm Version 0.9.0

Players take turns to place their atoms on the board. Causing explosions and chain reactions which convert enemy atoms to your own colour.
The object of the game is to overwhelm the board. The simple rules of the game give rise to complex and unpredictable reactions which keep you coming back for more.

History

I was first introduced to the concept of Atoms via a freeware program by Tom Kuhn that came on the coverdisk of an Amiga Format issue 64. It was human players only, 2 to 4 players. And it was some of the best fun I ever had with my friends and a computer. (except perhaps Gravity Force 2)
I suspect that the concept is even older than that very polished version. The only atoms clone I could find for PalmOS was human two player only and was pretty much abandoned so I began writing my own version

Features

  • 2 to 8 players with any combination of AI and humans
  • Scalable game board
  • Tournament or normal gameplay styles

Status

Version 0.9.0 now includes
  • Improved settings handling
  • Can now choose if the game should stop when only computer players left
  • A statistics screen
Features that are still missing include :
  • The ability to set the strength of the AI
Hopefully all these features will be completed before febuary 2005, once that's all added I would say that it'll be classed as version 1.0 and then only bugs will be fixed.

How to play

  • Each player has a colour and the players take turns to place a single atom on the board.
  • Players may only place atoms on empty squares or squares containing atoms of their own colour.
  • If a corner square (one with only two sides exposed) contains two atoms it will explode. placing an atom in each adjacent square.
  • If a side square (one with three sides exposed) contains three atoms it will explode placing an atom in each adjacent square.
  • If a middle square (one with four sides exposed) contains four atoms it will explode placing an atom in each adjacent square.
  • If a square explodes placing atoms on a square filled with enemy atoms those atoms will now be possesed by the player.
  • If a square explodes placing atoms on a square so that it becomes too full of atoms it will also explode. This can happen many times in one turn as a chain reaction.
  • The goal is to own all the atoms on the board. Players who have lost all their atoms may no longer take turns.
